Commitment

Recycling isn't new at Fort James. We reprocess recovered fiber and use it to manufacture a wide range of recycled-content papers. In 1992, we took recycled paper to an even higher level of quality by investing $65 million in our Halsey, Oregon deinking plant enabling us to reprocess recycled office papers. Halsey is one of the most technologically advanced office paper deinking plants in the West.

Harvesting the Urban Forest

Cities throughout the West use hundreds of tons of paper for essential business communications every day. This paper makes up the urban forest. Prior to 1992, it was not harvested to its full potential because it was nearly impossible to remove the inks, coatings, and paper toners on office paper. Our technology at our Halsey recycling plant removes these substances, producing a clean, bright product comparable to pulp made with virgin fiber. Using a 10-step process, the plant uses over 500 tons of recovered office paper a day to produce 360 tons of pulp from which new office paper is made. The recovered paper, which would otherwise end up in landfills, is collected primarily from western states and provinces.
